Step 1 Select the RIGHT Planning Buddy

Day 1 of 31 days to Creating Your Inspiring Personal Plan for 2012

Congratulations! You have chosen to make a wise investment in your future.

If you follow this 31 day program that launches today, at month-end you will a high quality, personal plan that will serve as your road map for success in 2012, and beyond.

Let’s be clear. For a plan to have real benefit, there must be diligent follow-through. But, you are most likely to follow-through when you have a well crafted plan that inspires you. Having a sound personal plan is the first step to your enjoying greater success in 2012.

Every day, over the month of December,  I will post one step in a process designed to help you create your best personal plan ever. The process is one honed from my decades of doing strategic planning for leading companies (you can read about that experience here) and from my decades of working with my many mentees. And, the process benefits from feedback from over 5,000 high performers who have worked through the process when presented online since 2009.

The process also benefits from ongoing input from some leading stars from Twitter who will be sharing tips as you progress through the process. Follow the process on Twitter at the hashtag #2012Plan.

Now for those of you who can’t embrace a process without first knowing the details, here is an overview of the process.

So, let’s get started.

Given how busy all of us are In December, doing planning – or for that matter any incremental activity – can be a challenge. Fortunately, this process has been broken down into a series of small steps, most of which you can complete in an average of about 15-20 minutes per day.

To make sure that you stay on track through to plan completion at month end, I strongly recommend that you “buddy up” with someone who shares a commitment to enter 2012 with a solid plan. Help each other stay on track through the next 30 days.

Later in the process you will be selecting your “Board of Advisors,” who will review your plan and give you feedback. Step #1 is to just pick someone who will be helpful in getting you through the process… for which you will help them do likewise.

Pick a planning buddy whom you are confident has the discipline to themselves follow through, thereby increasing the likelihood you will also complete your plan. Your buddy need not be a planning wizard. The process will be laid out in “baby steps” that any adult can easily follow. But, your buddy must be someone with whom you would enjoy accomplishing something important together.

When you have your buddy, both of you may want  publicly proclaim that you are joining the team of high performers committed to having a better 2012 by launching the year with their best personal plan ever. (Public proclamations whether on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ are a wonderful way to reinforce one’s commitment.) And, if you are on Twitter, be sure to include the hashtag #2012Plan in any post that you make about this process.

When you have completed Step 1, you can access Step 2 here (tomorrow morning). If you want an announcement every time a new step is posted, you can sign-up – to the right (below) – to receive new steps by either RSS feed or email.

PS. If you miss a day, for whatever reason, just climb back on. You can catch up quickly. Don’t beat yourself up, just climb back up.

PSS. If you have a question about any step, or want to comment about the process, please connect with me on Facebook and post your question on my Wall. That way, when I answer your query, others can benefit from your thoughtfulness.
